Investor confidence report – annual results

Investor Confidence Research's main research objectives are to:

  • Measure the level of confidence the public has in the New Zealand financial markets;
  • Measure perceptions and awareness of the FMA;
  • Capture the level of understanding of diversification and risk/return trade-off.

 

2022 survey

The 2022 Investor Confidence Survey found 66% of investors are confident in the country’s financial markets, down from 72% in 2021 - a return to pre-COVID 19 levels.

Key insights from the survey included:

  • For the first time, share investors outnumber term deposit investors
  • In another first, 10% of respondents said they invested in cryptocurrencies
  • Confidence in effective regulation is stable at 65% of investors surveyed
  • Among those who received investment materials, 59% said the materials helped them to make an informed decision
  • Only three in ten of those surveyed felt confident in knowing what to do if they experienced unfair treatment from a financial service provider
  • Investors feel much more confident they will be treated well by financial service providers than non-investors
