Recovery scams mis-claiming to be members of NZ Dispute Resolution Scheme Providers

We are aware of scammers operating recovery scams that are falsely claiming to be members or associate members of a New Zealand approved Dispute Resolution Scheme provider. These false claims are for the purpose of creating credibility to their scam operations.

How the scams work

Recovery scams will usually claim you are entitled to some sort of payment; for example they have either found some assets in your name or they can help you recover (or have successfully recovered) money you have lost;

  • They claim to be a member of a Dispute Resolution Scheme provider e.g. the Financial Services Complaints Limited (FSCL), The Banking Ombudsman (BOS), Insurance and Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO), or  Financial Dispute Resolution Service (FDRS).
  • The scammers will often claim that funds will be released to you once you provide personal information or make a payment (or more) to resolve the complaint, cover transaction fees, taxes, or some other expense. These claims are false. Even if you provide personal information or make the requested payments, no funds will be released.
