Fraudulent cryptocurrency investment platforms – Suspected scam

The FMA has become aware of a large number of fake online investing platforms.

Most offer investments in cryptocurrency, though some also offer derivatives or equity securities. These platforms are being used as part of a wider investment scam.

The scammers contact potential investors through social media, encouraging them to invest money in the fake platforms. These platforms often make unrealistic promises about returns which investors can earn, promoting guaranteed returns which are too good to be true.

When investors try to withdraw their funds, the platforms refuse to pay. They may ask for further payments to cover “taxes” or “withdrawal fees”, saying that the withdrawal will be processed once these extra payments are made. However, even if the investor pays the extra money, no funds are released.
