Cryptocurrency scams - Social media account hacking and crypto wallet manipulation

We are aware of scammers hacking social media accounts and pretending to be a friend. Scammers are using special codes and sophisticated software to manipulate victims’ cryptocurrency wallets.

How the scam works

  • Scammers hack a family member or friend’s social media account and approach victims posing as a genuine “friend” or “family member”.
  • The conversation is then moved to another social media messaging platform, such as Telegram or WhatsApp.
Scammers offer to trade in cryptocurrency for you, promising high returns.
  • Scammers give instructions to open an account with a legitimate crypto wallet provider, then give a special code and instructions to change account settings.
  • Once these settings have been changed, the account is switched from a “live account” to a “virtual account”, now fully controlled by the scammers.
  • Scammers then manipulate the cryptocurrency wallet balance using specialised software, make it look like as if they have earned the victim a lot of money.
  • A virtual account is a fake or simulated account, usually used for practice or demonstration. The money or wallet balances shown are not real and can be manipulated. You can't withdraw money from a virtual account.

As in many other scams, victims are told that funds will be released to once a payment is made to cover transaction fees, taxes, or some other expense. These claims are false. Even if you make the requested payments, no funds will be released.

How to avoid this type of scams

  • Be cautious when you are approached by your family or friends on social media talking about investment opportunities.
  • Contact the friend or family member by other ways, such as by telephone to verify their identity.
  • Do not invest or trade in financial products that you have little or no knowledge of.
  • Be careful when anyone or any platform requires advance payments to withdraw funds you have invested.
